Principal’s Message

May 26, 2021

Dear Mattos Community,

The last weeks of school are upon us and as we prepare to end the year I’d like to share important changes and information with our community.  This week is the last week that our wonderful school secretary Liz Whalley will be working with us. Many of you know Liz as the incredibly capable and smiling school secretary who has done an amazing job at Mattos for the last couple of years. Liz, who was honored at this year’s PTA Founder’s Day as well as through our District as an Outstanding Classified Employee of the Year has accepted an exciting new position with Ohlone College where she will continue to support the educational community and play an important role in making sure things run well.  Although she will be greatly missed as a Mattos Team member, Liz will still be a Mattos parent and community leader in our neighborhood. I know everyone will want to wish Liz well as she transitions into her new professional capacity.

We will also be saying good bye to Denise Liss one of our dedicated paraprofessionals who will be retiring at the end of the year. Ms. Liss has been an important part of our Special Education and Inclusion program offering support to students, teachers and parents for many years. Denise has always been a caring and proactive partner in education and she will be greatly missed. We all wish her well as she transitions to retirement.

This year has also brought some structural changes to Mattos as families have moved and our distric has had some declining enrollment. When enrollment declines schools sometimes face staffing changes as a result. At Mattos we will be losing some staff members to these changes. We will also be changing from an am/pm Kindergarten to an all am kindergarten which we believe will benefit our students and community who often request an am schedule.

Parents have been asking about childcare and I was recently informed that Adventure Time, our on-site childcare provider, will be back in operation this summer and fall.  This is great news for those families seeking a summer program and/or before and after school childcare this next year. Please check out information below that was sent to us to share with the community.

For those of you planning ahead and counting down to the end of the year the Mattos Learning Hub ended today and next week is a four day week for distance learning as we will be out for Memorial Day on Monday May 31st. The final week of school June 7-9 will consist of three short school days where the schedule will be 8:25-12:50. Kindergarten and 5th grade classes will be culminating in promotion events with details communicated by teachers. Our 5th graders will have both a virtual and drive thru event on the last day of school.

Thank you to all parents, students, staff and community members for your awesome collaboration in this year of distance learning. I look forward to working with everyone in person when we return next year. Until then, we will continue to work together as we all look forward to summer.  Please see a special thank you from the Burdette Family regarding community collaboration on the “Can’t LockDown Growth” mural.
