Mattos Principal’s Message Week # 35

May 19, 2021

Dear Mattos Community,

In a year of distance learning our community’s ability to collaborate and work together is more important than ever.  I appreciate the many ways that students, parents and staff have worked together to be positively connected. Many people have made efforts to maintain a cohesive and caring learning environment. With so many people being isolated working and learning from that home having connection is more important than ever.

If you missed the opportunity to be part of the many school groups that work to create student and family opportunities, curriculum, programs, and events at Mattos please be aware that with our planned full return in the fall there will be renewed opportunities. Parents and guardians will be able to join our Parent Teacher’s Association (PTA), School Site Council (SSC), and English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) groups that allow many ways to be involved with our school.

Our PTA membership is one that we hope all community members will obtain as a show of support for our students and school. As a PTA Member the membership allows for community members to show support through a nominal membership fee that directly supports school programs and events. Membership allows members to vote on important issues and events. Parents who join that want greater opportunities to be involved can also sign up to help with events, classrooms committees, Science Docents, or other opportunities. None of these are required but many are fun and interesting and offer opportunities to be involved once or multiple times depending on your interests.

The Mattos SSC is an elected group made up of staff and community members. As the Principal I am automatically a member but staff and community members are nominated and elected every two years. Community members can nominate themselves or nominate another community member that has agreed to run for election. The SSC meets monthly and collaborates on the annual School Site Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA). The members work together to look at our budget, programs, achievement data, and needs. Together, the SSC identifies annual goals for our SPSA, determines how to measure school goals and successfully reach them. The SSC also sets our site budget. Our SPSA is then reviewed and voted on, sent to the district for review and if needed revision prior to being sent to the school board for final approval. Our current SPSA for 2021-2022 has been sent to the district to be put forth for final approval.

Our ELAC also meets monthly however they are made up of staff and community volunteers that are parents of English Language Learners.  ELAC is focused on continually examining and improving our English Language Development program. Members review data, work with the SSC to include ELD goals in the school site plan and work to make sure there are opportunities for English Learners. One community member also attends the District English Language Acquisition Committee or DELAC and reports back to ELAC on connecting services across our district to improve opportunities.

As we look to the end of the year let’s also look to the beginning of next year and the opportunities that are available. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you’d like more information about volunteer opportunities. Thank you all for your continued and caring support.
