Principal’s Message

April 14, 2021

Dear Community,

I hope everyone had a positive Spring Break. Although many people were likely still working from home the break allowed for students and families to reconnect in ways outside of school and assignments. I know for some of our Mattos Team staff was able to visit with family members for the first time in a year. Many people have completed the vaccination process and although all are following safety protocols this has opened up opportunities to see family and even to meet new family members who were born within the last year.

Thank you for the continued work you are personally doing to collaborate with our school team. I am constantly impressed with the high level of parent involvement and dedication that allows us to do distance learning successfully due to teacher, student, and parent collaboration. Although we’d all love to see students back in school I know that in addition to recent events and decisions there are still concerns being expressed by our community about not returning too soon. This means we all need to remember to work with each other with kindness and patience. I want you to know I am available to help. If I can assist you please contact me at sguerrero@fusdk12.net. I am happy to work with you. Also remember to access the regular office hours teachers provide as they have thoughtfully set them up to assist students and parents.

I know with the recent ELPAC and i-Ready assessments that students and parents likely feel a bit of testing fatigue so you will be happy to know that the SBAC Testing will likely only occur for 5th grade Science. This will save several weeks of testing in grades 3-5 as we will be able to utilize i-Ready results for ELA and Math. There are many benefits to this including that instruction rather than testing can be a primary focus in the several weeks we have left of school.

We are beginning our planning for ending the year at the same time we start the process for setting up next year so I would like parents to be thinking about placements for next year. Our site goes through a careful and considered process for placing students each year for equity and excellence. Each team analyzes student data, input from teachers, parents, and our school teams such as COST which coordinates student services, and then students are placed in classes for next year. We start this process early to have a thorough and equitable process to benefit students and support teaching and learning. An important part of this process is any input parents wish to provide. Please see the attached Parent Input Form attached. If you would like to provide input you may do so on the form that should be returned via email to ewhalley@fusdk12.net prior to the deadline which is Friday, April 30, 2021.

An important consideration is that in addition to Mattos being a Science Magnet School we are also a K-5 Inclusion Site which means we have inclusion classes where teachers collaborate in a Learning Center or Co-teacher Model to address a wide range of student abilities with the support of more than one teacher and one or two paraprofessionals. This allows for the ability to have some whole class instruction with two teachers, flexible grouping and regrouping to differentiate instruction and the ability to work one on one with students as needed. The 2021-20211 school year will be our third year as an Inclusion site. We also follow inclusive practices in all classes through balanced placement of students, built in strategies for including all students, and grouping as needed for support and acceleration. In all classes placements are made to maximize student success and all our teachers are highly qualified. Parents will want to consider their student or students’ learning styles, social/emotional support needs and personal academic profiles when providing input for class placements. Please understand that teachers and our team give input as well. We do not take requests for specific teachers but do consider input regarding student needs.

I know our 5th grade parents are currently wondering about 5th grade promotion and I wanted to share that there are currently discussions occurring about what sites will be able to do in June. As soon as I have a definitive answer regarding this I will share it with everyone. Thank you for your patience and grace. Stay healthy and happy and keep doing the excellent work of supporting your beautiful children.

Cordially,

Susan Guerrero
