Principal's Message Week #20
Posted 1/27/21

January 27, 2021

Dear Community,

We are ending the month with some exciting news about increased social opportunities at Mattos.  Our Student Leaders in 5th grade, led by our own Jim McLeod have developed a series of Spirit Day activities for students to express themselves. The first of these is the popular “Crazy Hair Day” which can be anything from “Oops, I just got up with bed head,” to a faux hawk or purple hair. Kids can have the fun of being a little crazy and share their look on zoom. This first event takes place this Friday, January 29th. Please make sure if your child participates that their hairdo is in place prior to the start of class. Please see the flyer below.

In February, our counselor Haley Bautista will be hosting virtual “Lunch Bunch” for students in grades 1-3 and 4-5 to socialize and practice self- care. She will be doing the Lunch Bunch every Tuesday in February during lunch time. Please encourage your child to take part as Ms. Bautista is excited to see and interact with our wonderful kids.

I’m looking forward to seeing and interacting with our students more in several ways including with our youngest students. As our Kindergarteners are not part of Lunch Bunch we have set up a special event just for them. Our Kindergarteners will be receiving an invitation to a Teddy Bear Tea with the principal and Office Team. Our Team of Liz Whalley, Cathy Ytuarte, Onelia Soriano and I will be hosting this event, this special tea party via zoom will include a surprise for every student, activities to engage in during the tea, and fun activities to do later. Kinder Students will be receiving an invitation very soon with all information to join the party.

Chess Club is also coming to Mattos thanks to Felix Sandifer, our Science Teacher, who volunteered to set up a chess club for students. As you may know the strategic nature of chess makes it an excellent activity for all ages to learn important thinking skills and get practice in building the brain through focus, attention to detail, as well as planning and executing moves. Mr. Sandifer is excited to bring his love of chess to students at Mattos and is sending out information about the expectations and guidelines for participation.

A great way to promote interactions at home while also working on different skills may be to have your child create valentines for family members, other students and/or community members. You can do actual valentines at home for family or send virtual ones to make someone’s day. Are you separated from grandparents or others due to COVID-19? Have your child make a valentine to send to them and a let them practice kindness, art, and writing. Give a little love to others and see it come back to you.

We all need support and connection at this time so please reach out to me if I can be of support to you. I am honored to serve our community in any way that I can. I can be reached at and look forward to hearing from you. I heard from a variety of community members regarding important school issues, the need for assistance, the desire to connect with others when parents are new to the community etc. One area that I realize must be difficult is for our new families coming in at Kindergarten or who just moved to the area. Some of our parents need connections too. It’s hard to make new friends when you are sheltering in place. Please come to socialize this Friday at our Mattos PTA Community Coffee.  All are welcome. Please see the information for Zoom  below:
