January 6, 2021

Dear Mattos Community,

Happy New Year to everyone! I don’t know about you but I am really glad 2020 is over and a new year is starting. My hope for everyone is that 2021 will bring us closer to better health and increased happiness. Yes, we will still be facing challenges and we are all still working, teaching, and learning remotely but it is time to move forward as positively as possible while we wait to see what develops with COVID in our county, State and Nation.

Please remember that you are not alone and you have a team of people at Mattos who are working to support you and your children.  Let’s consciously face 2021 working together to take any action we can to make our current situation better. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at sguerrero@fusdk12.net if I can assist you.

As we look forward to the tradition of setting New Year’s resolutions I like to suggest that instead of setting the regular type New Year’s resolutions that we think about how we can continue to do some important things to stay healthy and productive as well by setting some doable goals around things we can control:

  • Continue to practice safety with masks, handwashing, and social distancing
  • Care for yourself as home partners in education and ask us for help when you need it
  • Enjoy supporting students learning remotely and embrace it as an essential interaction
  • Reach out to family and neighbors for remote socialization via Zoom or other online means

Suggestions: Set up gaming with others for kids, mutual family movies nights-Watch at a designated time and then Zoom for kids to discuss, Shared story time on-line, Chill and Chat

With families talking, having hot chocolate, etc.

At Mattos one of the goals we are setting is trying to find some ways to incorporate more social interaction for students.  Many teachers already incorporate time during instruction in creative and fun ways but parents and students have reached out to ask what more we might do. Our School Site Council recently met and this was an area we discussed. Some of the good ideas SSC Members shared were having:

  • Virtual buddies coordinating online learning activities
  • Virtual guest readers with older students reading to younger students via Zoom
  • Student Council Social Events
  • Lunch Bunch time with our wonderful Counselor Haley Bautista

We are trying to incorporate fun ways for students to have more social time while still keeping to instructional needs.  If you have ideas to share please feel free to email me and we will consider them.

Please stay healthy!

Sincerely,

Susan Guerrero

Mattos Principal
