Eagle Scout Brings New Mural to Mattos
Posted 10/10/17

Eagle Scout candidate Michael Paine of Fremont Boy Scout Troop 103 recently led a combined team of students and scouts in creating a science-themed mural at FUSD’s Mattos Elementary School. Michael, a Washington High School sophomore, decided to give back to the community after envisioning a mural to beautify the campus of his former school.

The mural was painted over the course of two weekends. After securing donations, conducting intensive research of mural paints, and learning specific techniques, the framework for the project was solidified. This 5' by 7' piece depicts an eagle spreading its wings against a blue sky, “Soaring into Science,” and features smaller science icons nestled in puffy clouds. According to Michael, the most difficult aspect of creating the mural was proportioning the design correctly onto the wall. Michael believes, “It (the image) could provide inspiration for our next generation of students, and encourage the love of learning and foster curiosity about the natural world.”

After completion, Mattos Principal Susan Guerrero remarked the “hard work put in has resulted in making our school fresher, cooler, and more beautiful.” In reflecting on the project’s success, Michael appreciates the dedication and positive energy of the Mattos Mural Team. See video here.
